At laparoscopy, a large cystic structure was seen arising from the pelvis (figure 1). The hernias were repaired and the patient was informed of the abdominal finding before being discharged home later the same day. The cystic structure was subsequently investigated with a CT scan (figure 2) and MRI (figure 3). The scans showed a benign 16 cm×7.5 cm×6 cm unilocular cyst with calcification in its wall. Aspiration cytology was not performed as this risked puncturing the thin-walled cyst. The radiological diagnosis was of a mesenteric cyst or urogenital cyst. Mesenteric cysts were first described by Benevieni, an Italian anatomist, in 1507. They arise during embryological development from ectopic lymphatic tissue or from incomplete fusion of the leaves of the mesentery. They are very rare, occurring in 1 in 200 000 adults. Malignant transformation is exceptionally rare. Urogenital cysts are equally rare and arise from vestigial remnants of the urogenital apparatus. Malignant change is also exceptionally rare. The management options were to excise the cyst either laparoscopically or by laparotomy to obtain definitive histology, or to adopt a conservative approach with yearly surveillance scans to assess cyst growth or change. In our case, the cyst was completely asymptomatic and radiologically benign, so a conservative approach was adopted. If in future it enlarges and causes pressure symptoms on adjacent structures such as the bladder, excision will be performed.

Over the past two decades, laparoscopy has advanced and multiple techniques for inguinal hernia repair have been established. Laparoscopic-assisted percutaneous extraperitoneal closure (LAPEC) for inguinal hernia repair in children, is one of the most simple and reliable methods. The present study aimed to assess the safety and feasibility of the LAPEC of inguinal hernia in children. From Januar...
متن کاملObturator Hernia: Laparoscopic Diagnosis and Repair
OBJECTIVE Review of international literature reveals eight reported cases of laparoscopic obturator hernia repair. Non-specific signs and symptoms make the diagnosis of an obturator hernia difficult. Laparoscopic intervention provides a minimally invasive method to simultaneously diagnose and repair these hernias. METHODS AND PROCEDURES A 35 year old woman presented with lower abdominal pain,...
متن کاملLaparoscopic Repair of Perineal Hernia
Perineal hernia is a rare but known complication following major pelvic surgery. It may occur spontaneously or following abdominoperineal resection, sacrectomy, or pelvic exenteration. Very little is known about spontaneous perineal hernia. Surgical repair via open transabdominal and transperineal approaches has been previously described. We report laparoscopic repair of spontaneous and postope...
متن کاملSuccessful laparoscopic management of an incarcerated obturator hernia
Obturator hernia is a rare pelvic hernia that occurs primarily in multiparous, elderly (>70 years of age), thin females. This case highlights the successful laparoscopic mesh repair of an incarcerated obturator hernia in an octogenarian. The authors report a case of an incarcerated obturator hernia in an elderly female with subsequent high-grade small bowel and its successful laparoscopic opera...

Background: Laparoscopic hernioplasty is a standard technique with increasing interest of patients and surgeons. Bilateral hernioplasty can be performed by laparoscopy as well. The aim of this study is to show laparoscopic bilateral hernioplasty is an acceptable method and use of eye-shaped mesh getting the best result. Methods: In 54 cases with bilateral inguinal hernia, under general anest...
